Set in the heart of the High Alps, Serres is a small town with origins dating back to the 8th century. Walking is a must to discover the architectural monuments that make Serres a typical medieval village. Four historical monuments particularly stand out: the 12-century Romanesque church of Saint-Arey, Lesdiguières house, with its polychromatic plasterwork, the town hall, as well as an 1882 noon mark and sundial on the facade of the current primary school. Its rich architectural heritage harks from the Middle Ages, which was a lucrative period for this strategic town, at the crossroads of communication lines that connected France to Italy. In the 14th and 15th centuries, popes heading to Avignon used to pass through, along with many travellers. The medieval town is now a place where art converges, partly thanks to “Hang’Art,” which brings together a designer boutique and community coffee shop. Above all, it is a place for young artists and craftspeople to show the region’s work. A chance to discover local art talent in the heart of a town with authentic charm!
